Ah, summer on Gabriola with long, hazy days; fun on the water; picnics and patios; children roaming the island on adventures; strains of music floating on the balmy air; and, of course, the Annual Salmon BBQ!
This year we celebrate the 70th anniversary of this iconic Gabriolan summer event. And also this year we moved the date from the second Saturday in August to August 23rd to ensure that we are far enough along in in the fishing season to secure sufficient quantities of salmon to satisfy everyone’s appetite. Last year, we managed to take delivery of the salmon only at the very last minute with much hand-wringing and many heart palpitations so this year we decided a change of date was in order.
As always, it promises to be a grand day: four hours of local entertainment, a delicious fresh salmon dinner with all the trimmings, beer and Ravenskill Orchard Cider, a children’s area, 50/50 raffle and silent auction, and Gertie has runs that can deliver you to and from the Hall. We will also have custom-made tee shirts for sale commemorating this milestone anniversary. Tickets are now available at Colleen’s and North Road Sports as well as online here:

We’re always looking for volunteers to give a hand as well as auction items, large and small, to help us raise funds. If you’re able to help out, please contact us at: ❤️ gicha.salmonbbq@gmail.com
Donors and volunteers will be recognized at our traditional Thank You Tea in September which will be followed by an Extraordinary General Meeting for the purpose of considering changes to the Hall’s By-Laws. Over the past several months, the board has been involved in detailed discussions on the by-law amendments and at the June board meeting approved the changes you can find here. Principally they concern the number required for a quorum at the AGM, the date for the AGM, the elimination of the category of Trustee, the election of the officers taking place not at the AGM but at the first meeting of the directors afterwards. All changes are in accordance with the current BC Societies Act but allow for greater flexibility, clarity and equity.

Looking back, we hosted a delightful Family May Day on May 10th in the Lund Gathering Place. Maypole dances, flower wreath making, a puppet show and picnics on the grass made it a memorable afternoon and one we hope to make an annual event.

The Friends of the Library held another hugely successful Book Sale in June and this past weekend Kebe and Fast transformed the Hall into an Aladdin’s Cave of treasures with fabulous rugs, textiles and home décor.
Thanks for your attention, and we hope to see as many of you as possible on August 23rd to celebrate the 70th Annual Salmon BBQ!
