With fall resoundingly arrived, your Community Hall is back in the saddle, juggling events and activities with a high priority on pushing forward with the Lund Gathering Place.
In a recent edition of the Sounder there was a lengthy article on the latest developments with the project. Most notably, the building permit has been submitted to the RDN and we have begun to solicit bids for the various scopes of work. These include:
– Concrete form work and framing, including reinforcing steel, concrete supply, place and finish, miscellaneous framing and the wood nail laminated timber roof structure as per architectural and structural documents.
– Structural steel, including the supply, fabrication and installation as per architectural and structural documents.
– Torch on roofing membrane and metal flashing.

We certainly hope that local contractors and businesses will get involved to make this a truly Gabriolan enterprise.
On September 24th we held a well-attended Open House and Community Tea to present the designs created by Architrave Design Build of Gabriola to the community.
The project envisages the creation of a structure surrounded by a green area. It will have a footprint of approximately 1000 sq.ft. with a concrete foundation, a curved roof supported by steel beams and with storage and electrical closets located towards the back. The inside of the roof will be a solid wood laminated structure and the exterior will be a living green roof to create continuity with the berm that will run parallel to South Road and which will provide weather and acoustic protection. The design allows for the later incorporation of eco-friendly features such as rainwater harvesting, solar panels, underground services, integrated lighting and furnishings which will be undertaken in a subsequent stage as new funding becomes available. The green roof will also probably be completed at a later stage. The Hall has already applied for grants to carry out this second phase and is extremely grateful for a substantial donation recently received to help us achieve this expanded vision.
The Hall is a registered charity run by a volunteer board with the goal of maintaining and preserving the Hall as a community asset in perpetuity for all islanders. The Lund Gathering Place is an exciting new addition to our community’s infrastructure and we welcome monetary donations and donations of work in kind {in exchange for a charitable tax receipt} to create this island legacy.
Please mark your calendars: Sunday, November 26th at 2:30pm we will be holding the Hall’s AGM. All are welcome and there is still time to sign up as a member if you want to vote. Here is the online form:
